Biodynamic cranial sacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on therapy that focuses on releasing restriction in the flow of cerebrospinal fluid in order to balance the body’s nervous system. Cranial sacral therapy can enhance health in new born babies and the elderly and all ages in between, helping with issues caused by birth patterns, injury, illness, severe trauma, and all the many stresses and strains of life, both physical and emotional. It often resolves issues that are not helped by other means.
The therapist’s gentle non-intrusive touch is open and curious and interested in how the client’s body wants to express itself. In order to engage with the subtle motions of the cranial sacral systems, the therapist needs to use an extremely light touch and be fully present. It is through this gentleness that the body is able to open up secure in the knowledge that it is not being threatened and allowing it to connect with the underlining health deep within. It can reach deep levels which are not generally accessed by other
more physical or invasive means which can trigger the body’s protective mechanisms.
Cranial sacral therapy is most often carried out with the patient lying on a massage table for about 45 minutes in a quiet and peaceful environment. The client remains fully dressed. It is best to wear loose comfortable clothing.
The therapist uses different soft hand holds to listen to subtle movement in the client’s body’s fluid and tissue fields. This light contact may be on the cranium (head), the sacrum (triangular bone at the bottom of the spine), the feet, the trunk, or any other part of the body as appropriate. Most clients report a deep restorative relaxation during the treatment. Some clients feel unusual sensations as their bodies adjust and align in response. Some bodies might twitch, shake, or vibrate as release occurs. It is common to have one or more experiences of stillness during a treatment that is often accompanied with a pulsing sensation. This stillness allows the body to re-orientate itself and recuperate.
It is a good idea to be well hydrated before and after any treatment and also to let the session continue processing by taking it easy for the 24 hours after a treatment. At the beginning of each session, you will have 10-15 minutes to talk and share your concerns and goals.
